BuddyPress Registration Options Plugin Review

· · 3 min read
BuddyPress

BuddyPress Registration Options moderates new members and can turn your site into a private network. In practice, that means the plugin blocks spam bots and unvetted new users from getting into your BuddyPress site until someone approves them, and new users won’t show up in the Members list until they’ve been cleared.

Worth noting: the plugin works with standard BuddyPress and bbPress installs. If you’re running BuddyBoss Platform instead (a fork that bundles BuddyPress and bbPress functionality into one plugin), you won’t need this add-on separately, since BuddyBoss Platform handles registration moderation on its own.

Benefits of BuddyPress Registration Options

  1. New registrations get checked before they’re treated as real users, which keeps bots from slipping past your defenses.
  2. Access can be tied to a user’s role, set by the site admin.
  3. The admin decides who gets in and who doesn’t.
  4. A user’s IP address is stored temporarily during registration and removed once they’re accepted or rejected.
  5. Every decision the admin makes is emailed to the user automatically.
  6. The plugin doesn’t hold onto extra personal data, so there’s less for you to worry about on the security side.

Settings

BuddyPress Setting

The General Settings tab covers four key options:

  1. New members must be moderated: Anyone who registers can’t access BuddyPress or bbPress pages until the admin reviews them.
  2. Restrict access to registered members only: Locks BuddyPress pages to registered members, keeping out non-registered visitors.
  3. New User Notification: Sends the admin a notification in the BuddyPress Notification panel whenever someone new joins.
  4. GDPR enforcement (an optional feature planned for a future update): When enabled, the user’s IP address is deleted from the new-member approval page.

Custom Notifications

Custom Notification of BuddyPress

There are five custom notifications you can edit:

  1. Profile Alert & Activate Message: Sent while a new member’s account is pending approval.
  2. Account Approved Email: Sent to the user once their account is approved.
  3. Account Denied Email: Sent to the user if their account isn’t approved.
  4. Admin Pending Email Message: Notifies the admin when a new member needs review, so approval can happen quickly.
  5. User Pending Email Message: Sent to a user who tries to log in before their approval has gone through.

Should You Use It

BuddyPress Moderation Pro

BuddyPress Registration Options is a solid, lightweight way to quickly approve new users. It notifies the admin automatically and adds privacy controls that keep site data away from people who aren’t community members yet. If your community is meant to stay private, it’s worth using.
